The original story was written by a Japanese Famous author, Ango SAKAGUCHI(1909-58), in 1949. And this script was written for SENGA Yuko by KISHIDA Rio in 1983.
The stage is totally in black colour except one cherry tree, and an old woman under it. All of sudden, a man's voice comes from the darkness behind the old woman.
Do you want?"
The old woman receives a cup-of sake(Japanese rice wine) from Kurogo(Black-costumed man). Then, she starts to tell the story about the bandit, who lives in Suzuka mountains, and the woman who came from Kyoto(the capital) and has endless desires.
Senga plays all roles including the bandit, the woman, the crippled woman and the others.
Then the story develops to solve the secret of horror under the full-bloom of cherry forest.
Makoto TANGE plays a traditional Kurogo role, who has no words. However, in this play he speaks and play a role as a old woman's shadow, which constructs a dramatic space.
TACHIBANA Masayoshi creates original sounds with percussion instruments, which consists of stones, nails, metals and etc at side of the stage. This sound gives a depth and an extent of space of the world, while contending with this world.
After the first performance at Tokyo in 1983, many stage has been held at big and small theaters, main hall of temples, museums, Japanese old house, Japanese-wine-celler and etc. And continue to now. Also in 1991 this was played at Niigata Prefecture, where Sakaguchi Ango was born, and in 1996, was played at Kiryu-city where he was died.
